In 2013 Habitat for Humanity International created the Affiliates of Distinction program to honor Habitat affiliates throughout the United States that meet or surpass the organization’s standards of practice. Of 1,400 nationwide chapters, only 1 percent will be honored at the 2015 ceremony, to be held at the Habitat for Humanity biennial United States Affiliate Conference in Atlanta, Georgia March, 2015. Of the 14 honorees, three operate within the state of California. North Carolina and Michigan are the only other states with multiple recognized affiliates, having two each. The seven remaining Habitat chapters include those of Monroe County, Indiana, and Milwaukee, Wisconsin.
As part of the Affiliates of Distinction process, all 1,400 chapters are graded in areas of green building and sustainability as well as their overall efforts toward positive community development. Affiliates are also graded in their adherence to Habitat’s strategic planning and use of technology.
